The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has released a report revealing a record-breaking surge in carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in the atmosphere, marking the largest annual increase since modern measurements began over five decades ago. According to the report, the significant jump in CO2 levels is largely attributed to surging emissions from devastating wildfires that ravaged various parts of the world.

The WMO’s report highlights that the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere reached a new high, with an unprecedented annual increase of 2.3 parts per million (ppm) in 2020. This sharp rise brings the current CO2 level to 415.3 ppm, a substantial jump from the 412.9 ppm recorded in 2019. The report notes that this increase is not only the largest since modern measurements began in 1958 but also exceeds the average annual growth rate of 1.5 ppm observed over the past decade.

The WMO attributes the significant spike in CO2 levels to a combination of factors, including increased emissions from human activities and natural sources. Wildfires, in particular, played a major role in the surge, releasing massive amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere as they burned across various regions, including Australia, the Amazon, and parts of Africa. The report also notes that the increased emissions from fossil fuel combustion and land-use changes contributed to the record-breaking CO2 levels.

The WMO report serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for global action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the impacts of climate change. As the world grapples with the challenges posed by rising CO2 levels, the report’s findings underscore the importance of continued monitoring and research into the Earth’s atmospheric conditions. The WMO’s Secretary-General, Petteri Taalas, emphasized the need for swift and collective action to address the growing threat of climate change, stating, “The record-breaking increase in CO2 levels is a clear call to action for governments, industries, and individuals to work together to reduce emissions and transition to a more sustainable future.”
